Annie had the distinct pleasure of contributing to the set decor of the British TV show, Black Mirror, a unique project in its global reach and artistic requirements.
The production team recognized Annie's ability to create "work-in-progress" paintings, essential for the plot of the episode filmed. For Series 4, Episode 2, she was commissioned to create two specific pieces: a horse and a landscape painting.
These artworks were not just decorations but a reflection of the character of a grandfather who enjoys painting as a hobby. It was crucial that the paintings fit seamlessly into the scene and authentically represent the character’s connection to his art.
Working on this project was a remarkable experience for Annie. It blended her passion for painting with the fascinating world of television production. She is grateful to have contributed to shaping the visual storytelling of Black Mirror, a show known for its creativity and cultural impact.
In 2010, Annie had the unique opportunity to create a series of 45 portraits for Hotel Sultania, a Boutique-Class Hotel nestled in the historical heart of Istanbul.
This commission, dedicated to portraying the wives of the sultans, became one of the most meaningful projects of her career. Annie meticulously painted each portrait in oil on round canvases, a choice that added a unique touch to the artwork.
The task was as challenging as it was inspiring—she had six months to complete all 45 pieces and frame them specially for display. To truly capture the essence of these remarkable women, she immersed herself in their lives, reading their biographies and aiming to reflect their strength, grace, and stories on their faces.
There were times when she painted for 48 hours straight, driven by a deep sense of purpose to ensure every detail was captured. Through her art, she wanted each guest at the hotel to feel a connection to the history and character of these sultanas.
Today, the portraits hang proudly in Hotel Sultania, welcoming visitors worldwide and telling their timeless stories. Hotel Sultania received TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards every year since 2010; Annie is honored to have contributed to its charm and story through her work.
Icon Paintings for a Church in Armenia - A Sacred Commission
A few years ago, Annie had the privilege of visiting a 500-year-old Orthodox church in Istanbul, a place steeped in history and adorned with breathtaking icon oil paintings on wooden panels. She admired those works of art. The church’s priest approached her, and Annie noticed his interest in her inquisitive observation.
The priest asked Annie if she was an artist. She responded affirmatively, sharing that her most recent project involved creating 45 portraits for a luxury hotel.
After a meaningful conversation, the priest expressed enthusiasm and told Annie she had remarkable energy. He asked her if she would consider accepting a commission to create icons on wooden panels for a church in Armenia.
She was told that such projects are rarely assigned to female artists, and the individual must have a pure, loving heart. Although she had never previously worked with the technique of applying gold leaves to wood, she embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly.
Six months later, she received three wooden panels, specifically prepared under temperature-controlled conditions within the church and consecrated through prayer.
Annie meticulously created the icons in a month, immersing herself in the sacred nature of the task. This project was a profoundly meaningful experience.
It allowed Annie to contribute to a centuries-old artistic tradition within the realm of religious iconography. The combination of artistry, spiritual reverence, and cultural heritage made this commission one of the most significant milestones in her career.
